N	(1)  A walking staff, cane: 禪杖 monk's staff, sometimes credited with power of saving souls; 錫杖 monk’s travelling staff, associated with monk's travels and whereabouts, see 錫 81A.50; the mourning staff, see 杖期 [zhang4ji1]↓; (AC) staff as privilege of old age: 五十杖於家，六十杖於鄉，七十杖於國，八十杖於朝 (禮記) at 50, privileged to carry cane in house, at 60 in the village, at 70 in the capital, at 80 at the royal court -hence the phrr. 杖鄉，杖國，杖朝. Words	1.杖期 [zhang4ji1], v.i. & n., degree of mourning for one year period; classical regulation on use of staff during mourning (用杖) or not to use staff (不用杖), according to prescribed and (Confucianist) codified degree of sorrow (on the assumption that the deeply stricken mourner cannot walk without a staff); 不杖期 one-year mourning without use of staff observed by husband for death of wife if parents are living, but 杖期 or 服杖期 leaning on the staff if parents are dead, etc.  2.杖履 [zhang4lU3], phr., the privilege of the aged to use staff (see N.1) and not take off shoes in house.  3.杖頭錢 [zhang4tou2qian2], n., money for buying drink hung on top of walking cane (allu.).
