(AC) staff as privilege of old age: 五十於家,六十於鄉,七十於國,八十於朝 (禮記) at 50, privileged to carry cane in house, at 60 in the village, at 70 in the capital, at 80 at the royal court -hence the phrr. 鄉,國,朝.

Words1.期 [zhang4ji1], v.i. & n., degree of mourning for one year period; classical regulation on use of staff during mourning (用) or not to use staff (不用), according to prescribed and (Confucianist) codified degree of sorrow (on the assumption that the deeply stricken mourner cannot walk without a staff); 不期 one-year mourning without use of staff observed by husband for death of wife if parents are living, but 期 or 服期 leaning on the staff if parents are dead, etc.
