是我說的 it is I who said it;
該（應）是時候了 it should be time (to go now);
是下雨了 it is raining;
是必有故 there must be a reason;
oft. like “if it is”: 是你做的，就該承認 if you (it is you who) did it, you should admit it;
是 (or vb. to be) idiomatically not required before a predicative adj.: 他大我小 he (is) big, and I (am) small;
他病了 he (is) ill;
這個容易 this (is) easy;
是…的 used in assertion, where phrase ending in 的 is felt as “one which,” “one who”: 這塊布白 or 很白 this cloth (is) white, but 這塊布是白的 this cloth is a white one;
他不是我生的 he was not one born by me;
不是我說的 (the words) are not said by me;
是不是，是否 is it or is it not, used in beginning questions: 是不是你說的 did you say it or didn't you? 是不是你要走了 are you going away? 可不是 is it not indeed, it is indeed (his own fault);
莫不是 (in sense of conjecture) could it be that, might it not be that: 莫不是他病了 it might be that he is sick.
(2) Used in answering “Yes”: 是 or 是的 Yes;
不是 No;
是了 that's it;
口是心非 he says “Yes” but means “No.”
