V	(1)  To love and care, to love tenderly: 愛惜，憐惜 to be tender and considerate toward (children, orphans, flowers), to love and care for (what is precious); 惜玉憐香 be tender toward pretty girls. (2)  To protect with care, to be sparing in use: 珍惜寶物 to keep treasure with loving care; 惜陰，惜寸陰 to harness one's time, value every spare moment for study; 惜福 not to squander when one has plenty; 惜墨如金 (of a writer, calligrapher, painter) abstemious in his use of ink; 惜指失掌 save a finger and lose the whole hand; 吝惜 parsimonious. (3)  To rue (the hour), be distressed: 可惜 it is a pity; 痛惜前非 repent, regret deeply one's past; 惜別 be distressed at parting.
