V	(1)  To work on or refine metal: 煉鋼 make steel; shape metal by fire (interch. 鍊): 煉劍 forge a sword. (2)  To refine, make by distilling or similar process: 煉蜜 make honey; 煉油 refine oil: 煉油廠 oil refinery; 煉藥 distill or concoct medicine; 提煉 extract by heat or other process; 煉乳 [lian4ru3]↓. (3)  To train, form character by hardship: 鍛煉 train character, learn experience like purging metal by fire; 熬練 (lit., “stew over slow fire”) learn experience, matutity, by hardships (cf. very similar use of 鍊 and 練).
