N	(1)  A wicked demon. (2)  Son born of a concubine: 孤臣孽子 a minister without support at court and a concubine-born prince fallen from grace, sometimes used of s.o. nobly espousing a lost cause. (3)  Seed of evil: 作孽，造孽 do misdeeds, be the seed of evil, bring disaster down upon oneself or others, sow the seeds of destruction; 天作孽，猶可為，自作孽，不可活 if disasters come from nature, s.t. can be done to counter them; but if they are of one's own making, one is done for.
