Y'all FLOODED my mailbox! OK OK! here's the list! I'll re-post it every once in a while (what's an appropriate interval? It's long) I have another one: PC BBS's for the Earth Sciences. If you want that one too, just ask. Internet resources for Earth Sciences ====================================================================== This is a list of resources available through Internet. I make no garauntees that this information is accurate or available to everybody, and all the other usual disclaimers apply (i.e. if anything you find and use here turns your system into a smoking crater, it's your problem! :-). This list is useful to me, and I'm passing the info on to you in hopes that what goes around, comes around. - Bill Thoen bthoen@csn.org Mar 2, 1992 ====================================================================== Usenet News Groups ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bit.listserv.gis-l Geographic Information Systems bit.listserv.uigis-l GIS User Interface issues comp.infosystems.gis Geographic Information Systems (superceeded bit.listserv.gis-l in Feb 1992) sci.geo.fluids Oceanography? sci.geo.geology Geology sci.geo.meteorology Meteorology Bitnet Discussion Lists ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AQUIFER@IBACSATA Pollution and groundwater recharge COASTGIS@IRELEARN Coatsal GIS discussion list ENERGY-L@TAUNIVM Energy GEOGRAPH@FINHUTC Geography GIS-L@UBVM.BITNET Geographic Information Systems UIGIS-L@UBVM.BITNET GIS User Interface issues IDRISI-L@TOWNS????? Please be aware that ftp can put some serious strain on the host system, so try to limit your downloads to off-peak hours (host local time!). All of these sites are open to the public. Login as 'Anonymous', and the password is either your own address or 'guest'. To download files to your system, type 'get ' where you substitute for the file you want. Also before you download any binary files you should issue the command: binary before you issue the get command. Here's a sample login to unidata.ucar.edu to get the current weather map. You respond at the 'ftp>' prompt. Lines NOT beginning with 'ftp>' are sent by the host computer... Also 'teal%' is my local system prompt at Colorado SuperNet. Yours will undoubtably be different. ----- start example ----- teal% ftp unidata.ucar.edu Connected to unidata.ucar.edu. 220 groucho FTP server (SunOS 4.1) ready. I'll maintain this list, but any and all help is welcome! (also if you could give me some hints about better formats, etc. I'm open to suggestions.) I'm new to Internet, so I don't always know all the conventions... like for instance, I didn't realize that IP addresses are so all-fired important to UUCP sites. If you could supply IP addresses for the above, the geo-community would appreciate it! I don't know how to find these in every case. I make no claims as to "ownership" or copyright of this list. It is now and forever, in the Public Domain. Selah. Many people have helped me make this list, but I was not careful enough early on to record their names. Sorry. From now on, all contributers will be cited on the bottom lines. You can always get the current version of this at ftp site csn.org in the COGS directory. Many thanks to David C. Menges and Colorado Supernet for providing the space! - Bill Thoen bthoen@csn.org A -- /\ Bill Thoen / \ bthoen@csn.org / \____________________________ Boulder, CO
