From: Christopher Currie To: djm1@Ra.MsState.Edu (Don Mabry) Date: Thu, 25 Mar 93 13:39:56 GMT Date: March 1993 GENERAL INFORMATION ON THE VICTORIA HISTORY OF THE COUNTIES OF ENGLAND, THE AVAILABILITY OF PUBLISHED VOLUMES, AND WORK IN PROGRESS This file includes information on the above topics in the order indicated in the heading. The general information and list of volumes published are revised once every year or two years. The report on work in progress is revised two or three times a year. It includes a list, arranged by counties, indicating places and topics which have been covered by articles in draft or which are planned to be treated in volumes in progress. This edition of the file includes for the first time, in the list of addresses of county editors, their email addresses where available. Lists of the contents of all V.C.H. volumes are included in the General Introduction, published in 1970, and the General Introduction: Supplement 1970-90, published in 1991. THE Victoria County History has an international reputation as a work of reference for English local history. It was begun in 1899 and was named, by her permission, after Queen Victoria. The publication of about three new volumes each year is gradually creating an encyclopaedic history of the counties, based on original research and ranging from earliest times to the present, an indispensable source for students of English society. For each county there is or is planned a set of volumes, containing both `general' and `topographical' chapters. The general chapters cover on a county-wide footing subjects such as prehistory and ecclesiastical and economic history. The topographical chapters give a comprehensive, fully referenced account of each city, town, and village in the county. Fourteen county sets are complete. The Institute of Historical Research has managed the V.C.H. since 1933, greatly helped since 1947 by local sponsorship. Work is in progress on twelve counties where sums of money from the rates and other funds provide for the compilation of the history. The counties in progress are, with the county editor's name, address, and Internet electronic mail address where available: CAMBRIDGESHIRE: c/o the Institute (as below) (cplewis@clus1.ulcc.ac.uk) CHESHIRE: A.
