Summary on a Newsgroup - news.announce.newusers

by Pauline Au

I have read the newsgroup called news.announce.newusers. I choose this newsgroup is just because the title is attractive for new newusers.

I recommend this newsgroup to those who are beginners in using newsgroup because it provides many useful topics that one should know before using newsgroup. Besides, since some of the articles in the newsgroup is being posted periodically, we can know the new trend of the newgroups. However, I think some of the news are a little bit longer and thus I think it is better be cut off into several pieces.

In the newsgroup, there are a lot of pieces of long articles. I have chosen one of them to read.

The main idea of the article is about the use of newsgroup. First of all, it tells us how can we choose the right newsgroup by just looking at its name. It gives a list of the meaning of the prefix of the newsgroup, for example, "comp." stands for computer hardware, software, system, language and theories, "news." stands for the Usenet news network and news software and "rec." stands for recreational topics, etc.. After knowing the meanings of these prefixes, I can access the right newsgroup much more quickly and easily.

Then the article goes on to talk about the rules and guidelines of posting news to a newsgroup. We should only post relevant information to a certain related newsgroup. For example, an article talking about sports should not be posted to a newsgroup about computer software. Moreover, we should choose a sensible header for the news we posted because the header is the key whether someone will read our news or not. Besides, no commercial advertisements should appear in a newsgroup.

Since there are still plenty of the rules and guidelines of posting news, I can't show all of them here. Therefore, I will suggest you to read the newsgroup if you are interested in it.
