Introduction to a Web Site -

IEEE Home Page

by Thomas Tam

I would like to introduce the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) home page. IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society. It is a non-profit organisation. Its goal is to promote the development and application of electrotechnology and allied sciences for the benefit of humanity, and the advancement of the profession.

The address of this page is http://www.ieee.org/. In this page you can find out the latest events and information about IEEE. If you want to become a member of IEEE, you can look at the procedure of joining IEEE and the benefits of being an IEEE member. You can also update your membership record when your personal information has changed. In case you want to contact IEEE, there is a directory of phone numbers and e-mail addresses of IEEE offices and departments. If you want to know more about IEEE, you can have a look at the strategic plan and history of IEEE. Furthermore, you can browse their bookshelves and magazines. In the Electronic Products page there is a forum for the discussion of ideas related to electronic products. It allows the users of this page to ask questions, respond to questions (even their own), and to otherwise comment on issues pertaining to electronic products. If you are interested in standards, you can visit the IEEE SPA (Standards Process Automation) server. There are IEEE standards FAQs, standards development resources and related WWW sites. If you are concerned about education activities, you can find them in the IEEE Education page. There is a catalogue of IEEE books, videos, and conference proceedings in the IEEE Bookstore page and you can order them online. If you want to join some technical societies of IEEE, you can first have a look at the list of society home pages such as Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society, Antennas and Propagation Society, Broadcast Technology Society, Circuits and Systems Society, Communications Society and Electron Devices Society. There are brief descriptions of the societies. In the Student Activities section, you can find out a lot of activities suitable for general students and there are IEEE-related newsgroups. In the IEEE Publications section, there are online magazines including Spectrum Magazine and The Institute (news supplement to Spectrum). Besides, there are tables of contents for upcoming issues of many IEEE transactions and journals. There are also links to other IEEE related pages like IEEE quick guide to help, IEEE Gopher, IEEE Women in Engineering home page, IEEE Staff 'Whois' searchable index and IEEE Web Documentation.

If you are an engineering student or professional, don't miss this WWW site. You can find a lot of useful information here.
