I. 目的 Objectives
本綜合基本課程，係將以前之人生哲學合併在內，迭經試驗與修訂，並以崇基創辦人士所持之基督教高等教育理想為重點。本課程為大一國文及大一二英文外之必修科目，由教務委員會委派之系際特別委員會主持。
學生在其主修科及副修科目外，須具較遠大之眼光及較廣博之學術基礎。本課程即以此為主要目的，而特別顧及下列各項：
甲、 對現代大學教育之性質與結構，目的與任務，及其對理性思考之重視，有所認識。
乙、 對中國及西方文化傳統，有所體會及評估。
丙、 對現代科學觀點，自然科學與社會科學之內在價值，及其與社會文化之關係，有所了解。
丁、 對當今與恆常之人生問題，作理性之思索，探討，並有所抉擇。
This programme of Integrative Basic Studies incorporates the Philosophy of Life programme of the past. Through continuous experimentation and revision, it emphasizes those Christian ideals of higher education that were the concern of the founders of the College. The programme is administered by a special interdisciplinary committee under the Academic Board, and is required in addition to the Chinese and English language courses.
The purpose of this programme is primarily to meet the need of students for a wider perspective than their major and minor subjects provide. It recognizes, in particular, their common need for the following:
a) Knowledge of the nature and structure, purposes and functions of modern university education, particularly its emphasis on rational thinking.
b) A critical awareness and appreciation of the cultural traditions of both China and the West.
c) An understanding of the modern scientific point of view and of the intrinsic significance of the sciences (natural and social) and their relation to society and culture.
d) An ability to face contemporary and perennial issues of life and their challenge to rational inquiry, discussion, and personal commitment.
